CNERG: Charting mastery: Developing a novel tool for evaluation of nursing students clinical learning

Erin Patterson, School of Health & Life Sciences
This research project focused on developing a valid and reliable tool to evaluate clinical learning outcomes for students in Conestoga’s B.Sc. nursing program. Existing evaluation methods often lack consistency and are influenced by assessor bias, highlighting the need for a standardized approach.
Through a series of workshops with nursing faculty and community partners, the research team identified key competencies and assessment items to be included in the new evaluation tool. These workshops also strengthened relationships with healthcare organizations, some of which expressed interest in supporting further development and evaluation of the tool.
The tool is being refined for implementation in Conestoga’s new B.Sc. nursing program, launching in fall 2025. Next steps include testing for reliability and validity, gathering feedback from students and faculty on usability, and developing training materials for assessors. The research team plans to disseminate findings through publications and conference presentations, contributing to evidence-informed improvements in nursing education.
