The Our Appreciation of Homeownership Paths study explored perceived barriers Ontarians face to entering the housing market. A survey of Ontario residents examined understanding of alternative models of homeownership (i.e. shared equity, co-ownership, and rent-to-own models). The survey also used open ended questions to compare barriers homeowners faced when purchasing their first home to renters’ current barriers to purchasing a home. Results were presented at the Association of Non Profit and Social Economy Research 2023 conference and to real-estate professionals at an event organized by the project partner Ourboro. The results will assist Ourboro, a social purpose organization, optimize its product to ensure it is meeting the needs of Canadians.

This project draws on research supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.
