Packaging feasibility study
Nicole Detlor, P.Eng. (PI), Conestoga Food Research & Innovation Lab
Atare Foods produces a range of African-inspired sauces packaged in glass jars and sold directly to consumers. However, due to the weight of their products, Atare Foods faces extra shipping costs that affect their bottom line. To find a solution to this problem, they collaborated with the Conestoga Food Research & Innovation Lab (CFRIL) to investigate alternative packaging options and explore preservation hurdles.
During the project, CFRIL studied the feasibility of moving from glass jars to pouches for some of Atare Foods' sauces and plastic jars for their hot sauce. The team evaluated the shelf-life implications of these packaging options on the products. By exploring different packaging options, Atare Foods can potentially reduce shipping costs and make their products more accessible to customers.
