Exploring intelligent energy management technologies that support electric vehicle charging, energy storage and sustainable infrastructure

Dushyant Puri, SMART Centre

About the project

This project focused on enhancing the capabilities of an electric vehicle charging and battery energy storage system installed at Conestoga’s SMART Centre. By integrating advanced monitoring, data management and analytics tools, the project supports more efficient energy use and provides a platform for future innovation in sustainable energy systems.

The challenge

As electric vehicle adoption grows, energy systems must balance charging demand, storage capacity, operational efficiency and long-term performance. The project sought to improve system visibility, monitoring and decision-making through integrated data and intelligent management tools.

Approach

  • Integrated system communication data into a centralized database
  • Connected the energy system with management and monitoring tools
  • Developed a browser-based interface for real-time access to system information
  • Implemented tools to monitor performance and energy usage trends
  • Explored intelligent algorithms to support charging and energy storage optimization

Results

  • Enhanced visibility into system performance through centralized data management
  • Developed a user-friendly interface for monitoring and analysis
  • Improved access to real-time operational information
  • Established a foundation for intelligent energy management and optimization
  • Created a platform that supports future research, testing and technology development

Why it matters

  • Supports the growth of sustainable transportation infrastructure
  • Improves the management and performance of energy storage systems
  • Helps optimize energy use and reduce operating costs
  • Provides learning and research opportunities in advanced energy technologies
