This project examined how internationally educated nurses adapt to nursing education and practice in Canada, with a focus on identifying supports that can ease the transition. Although many internationally educated nurses arrive with significant clinical experience, adjusting to new health care standards, workplace cultures, and communication practices can present challenges. Through interviews with internationally educated nursing students and faculty members, the research explored the experiences, needs, and perspectives that shape this transition.

The findings highlight that successful integration requires more than academic preparation. Participants emphasized the importance of structured mentorship, recognition of prior experience, and supportive learning environments that address both professional and cultural adjustment. The research identified mentorship as a key factor in helping internationally educated nurses build confidence, understand Canadian practice expectations, and navigate the broader health care system.

The study provides practical insights to inform nursing education programs and workforce integration strategies. Building on these findings, future work will focus on developing and testing a structured mentorship model designed specifically for internationally educated nurses, with the goal of supporting their successful transition and strengthening the Canadian nursing workforce.
