Wish granting in later life
Across North America, several charitable organizations grant wishes for older adults. Although research has examined the impact of wish-granting programs for children and families facing life-limiting or terminal illness, no study to date has captured the distinct nature of wish-granting programs for older adults. The Conestoga Centre for Health Care Research & Innovation (CHCRI) partnered with Chartwell Wish of a Lifetime to examine the nature and impact of their program for older Canadians.
In this phenomenological study, the research team conducted 18 in-depth interviews in English and French with older adult wish recipients and the staff members who supported them. Gerontological research on wishes among older adults has typically focused on end-of-life planning; this study takes a different approach by examining wishes in later life through the lens of pleasure, passion and purpose. Findings show that the program enhances health and well-being across several domains.
