Advancing teaching and learning excellence at Conestoga

The Centre for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CSoTL) is committed to understanding and advancing teaching and learning through rigorous scholarship, collaborative inquiry, and a steadfast dedication to student success.

At Conestoga we are proud of our reputation as a leader in delivering exceptional education, training, and applied research solutions. CSoTL enhances this work and is supported by Teaching and Learning in collaboration with Research, Innovation & Entrepreneurship. Our joint pursuit to transform teaching, foster innovation, and expand faculty capacity for research that informs practice is pivotal to our commitment to excellence at Conestoga.

What is the scholarship of teaching and learning?

The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) is research that involves the systematic examination of teaching practices and learning experiences. The goal is to improve student learning in classrooms, disciplines, schools and/or at institutional levels.

“It is a perspective on teaching and learning; it’s a set of practices we use to investigate teaching and learning; it’s a product that comes about from that investigation; and it’s something that has an impact.” -Tony Ciccone, University of Wisconsin (2013)

Our mission:

  • Faculty-driven research: Our centre thrives on action-oriented, faculty-led research projects. From exploring classroom and curriculum innovations to informing broader policies and procedures, our work aims to elevate teaching excellence leading to impactful, student-centered learning experiences.
  • Support: We offer a supportive environment and a variety of resources for educators to engage in reflective examination, inquiry, and impactful research.
  • Inclusive collaboration: We believe that the best ideas emerge from diverse perspectives. Our centre promotes collaboration across disciplines, departments, and campuses.
  • Student-centered approach: SoTL extends beyond theory; it focuses on improving student learning outcomes. Our research projects are grounded in real-world classroom contexts, aiming to enhance learning across Conestoga and beyond.
  • Dissemination: We are committed to sharing our findings within and beyond Conestoga. Our work will support educators in learning from each other and contribute valuable insights about evidence-based practices across the global SoTL community.
